A Malajziai Tudományos Akadémia (ASM) egy törvényes szerv, amelyet egy parlamenti törvény, az 1994. évi Malajziai Tudományos Akadémia törvénye hozott létre. Működését 1. február 1995-jén kezdte meg 50 alapítvánnyal. Fellows but has grown multiple times since then.The Academy’s membership is drawn from Malaysian experts in natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, engineering, and technology at the highest levels in the country. Its expert network now numbers more than 1000 which are spread across the disciplines of Engineering Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Biological and Environmental Sciences, Information Technology and Computer Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematics, Physics and Earth Sciences, Science and Technology Development and Industry, and Social Sciences and Humanities.

Az ASM számos nemzetközi és regionális hálózathoz és tevékenységhez járul hozzá és aktív tagja. Ezek közé tartozik a Nemzetközi Tudományos Tanács (ISC), az Akadémiaközi Partnerség (IAP), a Tudományos Világakadémia (TWAS), az Ázsia Tudományos Tanácsa (SCA) és az Ázsia Akadémiák és Tudományos Társaságok Szövetsége (AASSA), hogy csak egy párat említsek. Emellett az ASM ad otthont a Dél-Dél Együttműködés Nemzetközi Tudományos, Technológiai és Innovációs Központjának (ISTIC), amely az UNESCO 2. kategóriájú központja.
